School Bond Passes!

The North Powder bond has passed! Thank you to the North Powder community for supporting our schools and to the North Powder Political Action Committee for all their tireless effort to ensure success. It is amazing what a small group of people can accomplish when they set their minds to it. Again, North Powder has demonstrated why this is such a great community to live in and raise our children. 2017 NPCS Crystal Apple Award Recipients

Mr. Carlsen is our music teacher and Mrs. Townsend is our Kindergarten and Life Skill's teacher. We are honored and blessed to have them as part of our North Powder team!  They are being honored on Monday, May 8th at Eastern Oregon University at the David E. Gilbert Event Center. There will be light refreshments at 4:30 p.m. and the awards ceremony starting at 5:15.

Charter Enrollment

North Powder Charter School is currently accepting applications for the 2017-2018 school year.  Application forms can be found on this website under Parents~Forms. In order to continue offering excellence in education, NPCS caps class size at 23 students. There are slots available for the 17-18 school year in the following grade levels: PK, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 10th and 12th.

North Powder Bond Information Video

The North Powder School Board has placed a School Bond Measure on the May 16, 2017 ballot. The purpose of the bond is to make capital improvements at district facilities. For more information, please visit the Bond Information Page.

Halibut Feed

The Annual Halibut Feed will be held on Saturday, April 8 in the high school gymnasium. $20 for a halibut meal; $5 for a hotdog meal. Tickets are going fast!

Great Job, Badgers!

What a great weekend to be a Badger!!!! High school boys and girls are on to state in basketball. Our wrestlers placed very well at state.  Both boys and girls middle school teams won the Huntington Tournament again. What a year for Badger athletics!

EOU Regional High School Art Exhibition

This Exhibition is now open at Nightengale Gallery on the EOU campus and will be on display through March 21. Justin Smith won 10th grade Best in Show for a chalk pastel drawing.  Honorable Mention:  Casey Neske, Peyton Secl and Rylee Richman. Way to represent our school, art students!

Students Invited to Technology Expo in March

Do you know a student interested in technology? Students in 8th through 12th grades across eastern Oregon are invited to the IMESD's annual STEP Technology Expo on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. This FREE event is from 8 AM to 4:30 PM at EOU. Transportation will be provided to students from their school district (details are currently being determined).

The Expo is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in hands-on technology fun and learn more about school-to-career opportunities in the technology field.

Elementary School Damaged by Water

Update, January 4: Repairs in the elementary are almost completed.  Everything should be finished and rooms reoccupied by Friday.  Preschool will resume on Monday. 

The North Powder School District’s Elementary school sustained damage Monday, December 20, due to water pipes breaking. The south side of the older part of the building was affected, including the computer lab, preschool room, music room, girls’ bathroom and staff room. Ceilings and contents in some rooms were damaged.

Happy Thanksgiving from North Powder Charter School!  School will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, November 22 and 23rd for the Thanksgiving Holiday.  School will resume on Monday, November 28.

Coaching Position Opening

Creating a Safe and Improved Classroom Environment by Removing Backpacks from the Classroom

Here at North Powder Charter School we strive to create the best and safest learning environment for all students. To continue in these efforts, administration and teachers see the need to remove backpacks from the classroom. This change will increase safety by:

  • Reducing the ability to conceal weapons, drugs, or other contraband
  • Reducing tripping hazards
  • Creating more space and mobility for all, including those with disabilities

August Board Meeting Date Change

North Powder School District Releases Results of Testing for Lead in Water

This summer, the North Powder School District tested drinking water sites at all of its schools for the potential presence of lead. Results from Table Rock Analytical Lab and Anatek Labs, Incorporated indicate that all sites were below the acceptable EPA limit.

Sports Physicals

Sports physicals will be given at no charge by St. Lukes Clinic in Baker City on August 9 for 6th and 7th graders; August 10 for 9th graders; August 11 for 11th graders.  All nights: girls begin at 5 pm and boys begin at 6 pm.  Anyone who is on an off-year may attend any of the nights.

Student Farmers Hired

Photo: 2016 Student FarmersSincerey Shoemaker and Darby Lahaug are student farmers who will be working in the garden this summer until school starts again in the fall. The two positions are responsible for weeding, watering, and harvesting. The produce will be sold at farmers markets and will help support the garden. The purpose of these positions is to help make the garden manageable and successful.

“I am overjoyed to be able to be given the opportunity to work in our school garden. I think that this will be a great experience that I will benefit from in the near future,” says Darby.

The two student farmer positions are funded through the Specialty Crops Block Grant from the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

Congratulations, Michelle Williams!

Michelle Williams completed her spring Junior High rodeos in Central Oregon this past weekend. She has earned herself a trip to the Junior High National Finals which will be held in Lebanon, Tennessee June 19-25. Michelle won the barrel racing, finished second in breakaway roping and third in pole bending, qualifying her to compete in those three events. She was also named the Reserve All Around Girl! Best of luck Michelle on your 4,288 mile round trip adventure!

2016 Crystal Apple Winners

North Powder School District is proud to announce our Crystal Apple Award winners for 2016: Allie Scott and Nancy Simonis! The winners were recognized in a ceremony in La Grande. Please join us in congratulating these great North Powder School District employees!

Allie Scott has worked at North Powder School for eight years and currently teaches 1st Grade. Allie is an inspiration to her students and is constantly monitoring their progress to identify needs and successes, provide them the best resources and ensure academic growth. Through her exemplary organizational skills, she is an effective teacher leader through mentoring peers, identifying and implementing best practices, leading PLCs and managing staff meetings in the superintendent’s absence. “She is a true asset and appreciated more than words can express.”

Nancy Simonis has worked for the district for 28 years. During that time, she has worn many hats – cook, paraprofessional, janitor, summer maintenance, administrative assistant, nurse and more. Nancy is always positive, warmly greeting students and adults each morning and ready to step up and do what’s best for the district every day. She works with a variety of students, is fair and reasonable and is an advocate for others at all times, with a constant smile and a kind heart. North Powder is so appreciative of Nancy!

High School Rodeo Results

The high school rodeo contestants competed at Burns this past weekend, their last rodeo before the state finals June 16-18. Samantha Kerns, who is currently leading the girls all around race placed in the following: Breakaway, 1st, Goat tying 5th, Barrels 8th and 9th and Pole bending 1st. Kim Williams held onto her lead in the barrel racing by finishing 2nd and 3rd this weekend. She also placed 7th and 8th in pole bending. Samantha and Kim placed third in team roping at Saturday's rodeo. Gus McGinn placed in the top 10 in both tie down roping and team roping this weekend. The top 20 in each event will compete at the state finals in Prineville, with the top four in each event qualifying for the National Finals in Gillette Wyoming. 

Soccer Meeting

Coach Rushton will be here (Spanish room) at 3:45 on Thursday, May 19 to meet with girls in grades 8-11 who are interested in playing soccer next year.

High School Rodeo Results

The High School rodeo contestants competed in Hermiston this past weekend. Highlights of the weekend included Logan Nedrow finishing second, with a time of 3.22, in a very tough breakaway roping in the second rodeo, Kim Williams finished 10th with a 3.83. 

In the first rodeo Kim placed second in the barrel racing and Samantha Kerns placed 9th. Kim and Samantha finished 5th in the team roping and Gus McGinn and his partner got 10th place. Logan finished 9th in barrel racing in the second rodeo. Kim Williams also competed in cow cutting which was three rounds, she finished with a first place, third and 8th. 

The first junior high rodeo of the season will take place this coming weekend in Prineville while the high school contestants have a weekend off.

High School Rodeo


Logan Nedrow, Samantha Kerns and Kim Williams competed at the Klamath Falls High School rodeo over the weekend, In the first rodeo Kim & Sam placed 2nd in the team roping, while Logan and her partner finished third in the second rodeo of the weekend. Other results: Rodeo #1 Kim - 7th in barrels, Sam- 6th in barrels, 3rd  in breakaway, 1st in poles, and 6th in goat tying.

FoodCorps Service Member Job Opening

The Farm to School Committee is currently recruiting for our next FoodCorps service member. To apply go to and also see the details.  This is considered a full time position. The employee will be required to serve a total of 1700 hours over an 11 month period. They would receive a monthly stipend and health insurance.

Classified Employee Week

Congratulations to the FFA Greenhand Parliamentary Procedure Team for winning the sectional competition at Eastern Oregon University!  The competition consisted of the top three teams from the Snake River, Eastern Oregon, and Blue Mountain FFA districts.  The North Powder team advances on to the state contest which will take place March 18th-21st in Corvallis at the Oregon FFA State convention.  The Oregon State winner will have the opportunity of advancing to the National competition which will take place next fall in Indianapolis Indiana. The team members include Samuel Pointer, Logan Nedrow, Raimey Brown, Sonora Blair, Skylar Blakenship, and Hollie Minor.  Congratulations, and good luck!!

Immunization Clinic

Baker County Health Department will have an immunzation clinic on Wednesday, October 28 from 3-5 pm in the multi-purpose room. Flu shots will be available.  Please copy your insurance card, front and back, and bring it with you or send with your child.

North Powder School District 8-J Asbestos Management Plan has been completed according to State and Federal regulations. The plan is available for review by interested persons at the office of the superintendent between the hours of 8:00 am and 4 pm, Monday through Thursday.

Riki's Room Update

Riki's Room Update: Riki's Room has moved to the old clinic.  We are in the process of organizing and setting the room up.  At this time, we are in need of the following items: New children snow boots for boys and girls sizes 10-11-12-2-4-6-8 and new little girl coats sizes 4-6-8.  Any cash donations will be used to buy the items on the list.  Please make sure donations are specified "Riki's Room." We are not accepting any used clothing for Riki's Room.  We never accept used underwear, used socks, clothing with stains and tears, or

Congratulations FFA!

North Powder FFA students did a terrific job at the Kentucky Cattlemen's tour stop.  They were exceptional in their representation of our school.  The group from Kentucky remarked repeatedly about our students and how impressive they were. They were outstanding and deserve recognition.  Students who attended: Gus McGinn, Kachira Phillips, Logan Nedrow, Holly Minor, Justin Morris, Megan Hufford, Tyler Hufford, Sonora Blair, Whit Blair.

Elementary Hat Fundraiser

Elementary students can wear their hats to class the week of September 21-24 for a fee of $1 a day or $3 for the week.  Proceeds go to 4th grade yoga balls. 


Thursday, September 24 the Josten's rep will meet in Mrs. Colton's room with Juniors at 7:30 am to discuss class rings and seniors at 8:30 am to discuss graduation announcements, etc.

District Launches Mobile App

The North Powder School District is excited to announce the launch of its mobile app. The free app is available on both Apple and Android mobile devices (including cell phones and tablets) by searching for “North powder Charter Schools” in the app store.

The mobile app, developed by School Messenger – the District’s parent notification system – in coordination with InterMountain ESD, pulls information from the District’s web site into a more mobile-friendly application easy to view on cell phones and tablets. Students, staff, parents and community members can now download the free app to gain instant access to school announcements and news, school calendar and athletic schedules, FamilyLink, and contact information.

Additionally, parents will be able to receive “push notifications” from the District with the app, meaning they’ll receive instant alerts on their mobile devices when important information about school – such as a closure or delay due to inclement weather – are released.

The app will update frequently all year, so those who download it will always have the latest information about North Powder schools.

Come on out for a great night of fun and entertainment!  The annual Men's Alumni Basketball Game will be held on Friday, June 26 at 7 PM in the high school gym.  Cost is $10 to participate and $3 admission. 

June School Board Meeting Change of Date

The regular meeting of the North Powder School District 8-J Board of Directors will be held on Monday, June 22 at 7 PM in the music room.  The public is invited to attend.

North Powder Receives OSAA Grant for Soccer Field

Young athletes interested in playing soccer in North Powder will soon have their own field on which to perfect their game. This spring, the North Powder School District was awarded a $10,000 Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Foundation School Participation Grant to build a new soccer field.

Riki's Room Open For Families
