Did you know that each year, schools across the country take part in a celebration called  Read Across America Week? Read Across America Week is a nationwide celebration designed to promote reading and literacy among children of all ages. It always falls on the week of March 2nd, to celebrate the birthday of beloved children’s book author, Dr. Seuss. His fun, imaginative characters, creative rhyme schemes and bright colors make learning fun for the youngest of readers.

Participation during this week differs between schools. Some schools host literacy events, invite guest readers for a special storytelling, or have a series of dress up challenges for their students throughout the week. North Powder Elementary went all out this year! Students could participate in a variety of fun challenges, including keeping a reading streak, finding silly places to read and take pictures, and making extra time to read each day.

Thanks to our community’s support, our Math and Literacy Night was a huge hit! Families came to the school to engage in fun, hands-on activities that highlighted both math and reading skills. Plus, students and families left the event with free books, generously provided by the Baker County Community Literacy Coalition.

In addition to all this fun, School Resource Officer Tony Humphries (Union County) and Deputy Gabe Maldonado (Baker County) gave our students a storytime to remember.  We are so grateful to our community partners for their continued support.

To close the week, students were awarded for their photo submissions. Students who won the photo challenge received themed goodie baskets with fun prizes inside! After the winners were announced, a huge read-aloud session was hosted in the gym. Teachers settled in an area in the gym, and students gathered around them to hear different stories.

On top of our gracious community partners, we’d like to thank all the teachers and staff who work each year to make this week more and more special for our students. From decorating bulletin boards, to creating class activities and challenges for the kids, your time and effort are very much appreciated.
